You can smell the wood depending on how close you are to the fire. Three feet away from the fire, you can smell the wood. How wood smells at 10 or 15 feet will depend on the direction of the wind.  This fire stand is really well-made and safe. I guess I could have found a washing machine tub at a scrap yard, but that wasn't what I was looking for. Even though you can sit close to it to feel the heat, I suggest keeping furniture at least 18–24 inches away from the Solo when it's on.
